Projects & Institutions

Welcome to the website of the Catholic Church in Sierra Leone.

“The joys and the hopes, the griefs and the anxieties of the people of this age, especially those who are poor or in any way afflicted, these are the joys and hopes, the griefs and anxieties of the followers of Christ.”

Inspired by those opening words of the Second Vatican Council’s Pastoral Constitution of the Church in the Modern World, Gaudium et Spes, the Catholic Church in Sierra Leone continues to bring the saving message of Christ to the people of the land, through the various pastoral activities of the dioceses and Catholic projects in the country. On this site, you are invited to share the missionary activity of the Church in Sierra Leone.

The plenary meeting of ITCABIC took place from the 20th to 27th January 2019. The meeting was hosted in the Catholic Diocese of Bo, Sierra Leone.

The President of Conference in his Opening Address welcomed all the Bishops present at the meeting. He further remarked that, “We all look forward to these days as cherished moments to live our unity and communion. The opportunity of our annual meeting offers us time for prayer, reflection, sharing and discussions on issues of common pastoral concerns. Suffice it to say, we have been bonded together in a unity of service to our particular Churches in union with the universal Church”.

JOURNEYING TOWARDS PEACEFUL AND CREDIBLE ELECTIONS :: A Pastoral Letter on the Elections in March 2018
We greet you in the name of the Risen Lord; and pray that we may all pass over from death to life and that raised from the dead by the Father’s glory, we too might, live a new life (cf. Rom. 6:4).

We, the Catholic Bishops in Sierra Leone, upon prayerful reflection, issue this pastoral letter in view of the parliamentary, local and presidential Elections scheduled to take place on 7th March 2018.

As your Bishops, we have a responsibility to lead souls to greener pastures. It is our duty to engage in the dialogue over our country’s future and the Sierra Leone we want for all. Pope Paul VI reminds us that “It is up to Christian communities to analyze with objectivity the situation which is proper to their own country, to shed on it the light of the Gospel’s unalterable words and to draw principles of reflection, norms of judgment and directives for action from the social teachings of the Church.” (Octogesima Adveniens no. 4).

HEALING THE MEMORIES OF PAIN AND DIVISION – THE CONFRATERNITY OF PRIESTS IN SIERRA LEONE MOVE TOWARDS PEACE AND RECONCILIATION
The Sierra Leone Confraternity of Priests met in Mile 91 on January 27, 2017. It was both a retreat and a meeting chaired by Rev. Fr. George Ehusani from Nigeria.

After the opening courtesies, Fr. Ehusani, in his first session gave a clear picture of the Sierra Leone context; a country that has suffered from a terrible civil war, a dreadful epidemic Ebola and bad governance. For citizens depressed, oppressed and traumatized, Fr. Ehusani noted that God can turn tragedy into blessings. He pointed out that as wounded healers we are called to lead others. “He have failed and let down our people but we can start afresh,” Fr. George indicated. In what follows we present key issues in Fr. Ehusani’s address
